New grant opportunity for land trusts

The Land Trust Alliance is partnering with AARP to offer a special funding opportunity for Alliance Members. Through the Mayoral Outreach & Livable Communities program, special Community Challenge grants are now available. These small grants — averaging $10,000 each and ranging from $400 at the low end to $40,000 at the high end — are intended to improve communities with small but engaging and tangible projects; jumpstart progress for longer-term change; and demonstrate improvements that benefit all ages.

This train-the-trainer is intended for agricultural educators of all kinds! Any extension, land trusts, conservation districts, and other community partner organizations interested in advising beginning farmers and ranchers on their land access decision making!

American Farmland Trust (AFT) conducted an extensive national inventory and evaluation of existing farm succession and land access curricula. Although land access is one of the leading barriers to entry for new and beginning farmers, AFT found a significant gap in resources and curricula to address this vital yet complex issue. In response, AFT created Farmland for the Next Generation: Land Access Training Curricula, a comprehensive, skills-based tool kit for agricultural educators to help beginning farmers and ranchers assess their readiness and find and secure a suitable land tenure situations.

The curriculum was developed to help beginners attain core skills or competencies. It is structured around a series of eight Learning Plans, or workshops, and the core competencies they address. If delivered without modification, this represents three days of training. However, it can be adapted to meet the needs of different audiences and levels of experience.
